Kim Hye Jung’s interview about working with G-Dragon?

Director of ‘Butterfly’ music video from G-Dragon’s first full-length solo album
Producer of videos for ‘Gossip Man’ and ‘She’s Gone’ featured at G-Dragon’s Shine a Light concert

G-Dragon’s gallery planned an interview with director Kim Hye Jung for the publication of G-Book volume 2. Inverview questions were taken from gallery members for a period of about two weeks from April 20 to the beginning of May; after screening such interview topics in addition to survey questions regarding director Kim Hye Jung’s projects and videos, it has all been organized and produced into an interview book that was released on June 1, 2010. We thank director Kim Hye Jung, who not only graciously agreed to the interview, but also sent us honest and sincere responses to all of the questions.

1. How did you come to work with G-Dragon?
- What was your first impression when you were asked to work on the music video; what was it that most influenced your decision to work with G-Dragon?

When I first received the request and heard the music, I thought it was really surprising.
That fact that [‘Butterfly’] had a completely different feel from the intense title track was fresh to me, and first and foremost I liked the song a lot. I sketched a few scenes that came to mind while listening to the song, and it’s true that once I showed it to them, I worried that my ideas were too far from what was considered popular. But surprisingly, G-Dragon had requested something that would not entangle him within the idol frame but would rather allow for more freedom. I remember that after that first meeting was over and I turned to leave, President Yang [Hyun Suk] told me that “of all the songs on his album, this is the one that G-Dragon treasures the most.”
I had felt this way when I first received the song, but once again it came to me like a fresh shock and I felt really good. I started to give this artist called ‘G-Dragon’ a second thought and knew that it would be an awesome project.

What most influenced my decision to work with G-Dragon.. would probably be just because he is G-Dragon. ^^

2. How was working with G-Dragon?

G-Dragon’s music stirs up visual inspiration. I think he wanted to express his music visually in that way and give off an extremely fresh feel.
Even though he did not say much, G-Dragon fully understood story boards and concepts that were explained to him only once and followed through by preparing not only his wardrobe and hair accordingly, but also props and other items for the set.
I believe that he was extremely professional in his ability to put forth his best on set and yet respecting the line between his own role and the role of the director.

3. What is your impression of ‘Butterfly’?
- Was there any inspiration that immediately came to mind as you first listened to the song?

There was an image that was floating around in my head from the moment I first heard the song until the moment production for the music video was complete. It was the image of ‘the laugh of a boy in love.’
The feverish thrill that all people experience at least once. I thought of things like twinkling joy and memory. But because the pounding of the heart may be painful to the one who is experiencing this fever and the beauty of it all may only be recognized after the fact, at times this fleeting transcience came across to me as a distant sadness.

4. How did the form for the ‘Butterfly’ music video come about?
- Where did you get the idea for the music video’s concept?
- The union of real picture and animation: what led you to utilize such a technique?

When I first received the request, I heard that they wanted an animated music video. The concept came about after discussing the preliminary sketches I drew.
The music itself gave me very vivid visual inspriation, but it was G-Dragon’s blond transformation that helped me conjure up images of different fairy tale characters.
Also, G-Dragon himself as a person is someone who looks very strong but is actually quite sensitive and pure, and he has a complicated charm that simultaneously carries conflicting sides, just like how he is loved by many yet still somehow looks lonely, so I started from there and created a character accordingly.
Truthfully speaking, the combination of real picture and animation is something I didn’t even expect. The real picture was taken for the purpose of the animation’s motion capture, but there were too many great takes to just throw away. Also, G-Dragon fit in seamlessly with the illustrated background. I showed a few scenes with G-Dragon cropped into the animation to G-Dragon himself and the rest of the YG staff, and in the end, we decided to change the direction of production accordingly.

5. I’m curious about the girl in the ‘Butterfly’ music video.

The girl is a universally relatable virtual character.
I wanted those who watch the music video to become one with the girl and see G-Dragon through her eyes. And so we purposely designed her looks, clothes, and style to be normal rather than flashy.
The scenes in which the girl is blankly staring out the window or where the boy comes along and haphazardly grabs the girl’s wrist and carries her to a far away land resembles my childhood to a certain extent, when I would fantasize and dream about breaking free from reality.

6. About ‘Butterfly’ music video

The ‘Butterfly’ music video is a kind of fantasy. I believed that the fantastic and beautiful feel given off by the music and the fantasy world that G-Dragon guides you through were one and the same.
I gave a lot of thought to the background of the fantasy world, but I gave the most consideration to the character of mystical boy. I wanted to show a side that was different from the strong and unique image that we’ve seen [from G-Dragon]. Of all the music videos off of his first solo album, ‘Butterfly’ is the one in which he changes outfits the least. (^^)
But it’s true that it was extraordinary because of G-Dragon. This character who is not just a nice and handsome fairy tale prince, but has a somewhat dark side to him, and yet is able to disarm those around him with his bright and unconditional smile is a character that I believe only G-Dragon could have pulled off.
As long as the production time for this music video was, there are many symbolic elements hidden all over the music video. And I was really interested in all of the various interpretations by those who watched the music video once it was released. There were ideas that I had intended and even those I had overlooked. There are many questions in this interview asking about this, but I don’t think it’s my place to say one way or another. I believe that the meaning of the music video will be made complete once we put together all the different interpretations by those who watch it through their different view points.

7. How was working with G-Dragon on the ‘Butterfly’ music video?

While turning ‘Butterfly’ the song into the music video, the things that G-Dragon specifically required were not about simply trying new things. He did so in order to break free from the preconception of being an idol and show never-before-seen sides of himself.
As expected, he showcased a shocking transformation through a solo album into which he poured all of himself, but I believe that ‘Butterfly’ was another shock in and of itself.

8. How did the background for ‘She’s Gone’ come about?

From the beginning I had the stage in mind for the video of ‘She’s Gone.’
So our priority wasn’t to produce an awesome music video, but to create a video with straightforward meaning and expression that would highlight the stage and the music, and I think that is what inspired those who watched it.
As much as G-Dragon was inspired by a movie to write the song, the inherent ‘cruelty’ found in the song was not literal but part of a fantastical and aesthetic fiction, and so the decision to create this video like a scene from a movie came naturally.
Also, this performance is not a story of a provocative ‘murder,’ but a way of expressing the crooked image of a man who chose a theatrical way of loving, and so in order to portray a world that was far from reality, a scene from a cruel fairy tale, we chose the backdrop of a time that is not the present.
The opening of the title screen as if it were a movie, the monotone of the picture with the contrasting red of the blood – which looks like red paint – were all ways to separate the story from reality.
And because the song ‘She’s Gone’ is not a cold and cynical song, but one that carries the burning feeling of a man who yearns for a woman until the very end to the point where he cannot control himself, I thought it would work well with a classical and romantic theme.

9. I’m curious about the candle in ‘She’s Gone.’

Originally we had G-Dragon open by smoking a cigar.
The scene with the candle was a scene that I shot in the middle of filming. Whenever I think of an image in between cuts I like to shoot it right then and there, and that’s how the candle scene came about. Because GD’s good with improvisations, he was able to pull off scenes that I came up with on the spot without a hitch.
So there are some cases where such improvised scenes make it to the final cut, and while it wasn’t intended this way, I used this cut while I was editing the age-12-and-under version.

10. About ‘She’s Gone.’

Of all the work done for ‘She’s Gone,’ I remember the first rehearsal the most. Because both Jiyong and I were really busy during the time before the concert, we had only been able to meet to discuss the stage for ‘She’s Gone’ very briefly once at the general meeting. And so I went to that first rehearsal half worried and half excited, and I remember clearly getting a really strong impression from how smoothly everything went at the first run-through, from the transition from video to the stage, to the emotional expressions and stage directions.
I want to say that those who did not see ‘She’s Gone’ at the concert will not be able to understand this feeling 100%. The video and the stage, along with the connection with the audience all led to an incredible experience in which one could feel the energy from GD’s explosive emotion.
If there’s one thing I regret it’s that those who did not see ‘She’s Gone’ at the concert would interpret the video by itself and distort the essence of the performance.

- As a director, what do you believe to be the story and feel behind ‘She’s Gone’?
The image I got when I first heard the song was a film noir centered around a murder mystery. GD could have played two roles of both cop and murderer, or he could have been a character conflicted between a duality that he himself wasn’t even aware of. If it had been made into a music video, it probably would’ve had a much more complicated storyline.

11. About the ‘Gossip Man’ video.

Filming for ‘Gossip Man’ began without storyline. We began filming with only the general frame of doing a parady of Kim Gun Mo’s outfits and backgrounds.
When filming began, G-Dragon was tired from his schedules the day before, but as time went on he came alive and had fun with the parodied wardrobes. And he did something different for each cut without repeating any of the same gestures or movements. Honestly speaking, at this point I left it all up to G-Dragon and simply rolled the film.
‘Gossip Man’ is ultimately a song that makes light of a heavy issue. We focused on that point for the video centered around humorous and bright expressions through parody. But I think there’s some dark humor to be found here, as one finds it hard to outright laugh at a performance in which [G-Dragon] is calling himself gossip man.

12. What are your thoughts or impressions about G-Dragon?

I’ve only seen G-Dragon’s industrious and professional sides, so I don’t know who is as a person. One thing I did feel as I stood by him during his solo activities is that the things he has to endure must be even greater than anyone could imagine. There are times when he appears mature beyond his years, which is probably why I feel this way.
And after working with G-Dragon, it’s true that my opinion about men as a subject matter has changed. I thought, hm… Men are also capable of such visuals, this kind of emotional expression… But such men are probably quite rare…

13. About G-Dragon’s acting.

When GD stands in front of a camera, I open the door to possibilities other than what was discussed on the storyboard. He isn’t afraid to come apart in front of the camera and shows many different sides of himself. It can’t be easy not to be self-conscious of these things in front of so many cameras and staff members, but his freedom always made for new things on set.

14. How is it like filming?

Honestly it is mostly difficult… On day two of filming for ‘She’s Gone,’ G-Dragon was already exhausted and he had a departing flight the next day, so everyone was on edge. We were filming the scene with the candle and coincidentally GD blew it out with his nose, and all the tension broke and everyone started laughing. After that G-Dragon showed off his skills in blowing out candles with his nose and I remember the atmosphere on set becoming lively again.

15. What project are you most attached to and which scenes do you treasure the most?

I have to say the projects I’m most attached to are ‘Butterfly’ and ‘She’s Gone.’
It was pure luck for me to able to do two such contrasting projects with a single artist.
If I were to pick my favorite scenes from each project, they would have to be the final cut from ‘Butterfly’ where GD is sitting on the roof, and the outtro of ‘She’s Gone’ where GD first appears twirling a jack knife while thunder rolls in the distance. We filmed this in one long take and the camera movement along with GD’s acting and the timing of the thunder all fell in place perfectly, and we ended up with a really great scene.

16. About the director, Kim Hye Jung.

Rather than looking at the reality within a shot, I am more affected by creating the things you cannot see in reality. That’s why I think many people feel that my work is like a fantasy. You can say that music videos themselves are fantasies in that you create a visual world for a piece of music that you cannot see with your eyes.

If there was a difference between myself and other works and music videos, it would be that I consider the cooperation with the artist and the synergy that comes from that cooperation to be extremely important and effective.

I normally enjoy visually imaging while listening to music, so I don’t ever really enjoy the music for itself. I find myself listening to music that can inspire me visually, without regard for the genre or musician.

When ‘Butterfly’ was released after two and half months of work, I was happy but was also met with this inexplicable feeling of nothingness. I could only see parts that were lacking so for awhile I had a hard time watching the final product. When ‘Shine a Light’ concert was aired in theaters, I was embarrassed just sitting in my seat. Ultimately, I am not very cool. ^^

17. Is there a project you’d like to work on with G-Dragon in the future?

After filming ‘She’s Gone,’ President Yang talked to G-Dragon about doing a short film, and that if there was the opportunity it would be nice to make a 15-minute short film in which we would be able to showcase his acting that didn’t make it into the short videos. If this ever becomes a reality I think it would be a really fun project to work on.
From G-Dragon’s solo album, I would like to put together a music video for ‘She’s Gone’ that is completely different from the concert video.

18. How do you feel now that the interview is over?

Interviews are harder than I thought! ^^;
But I enjoyed looking back on my past projects. I would like to do this again once I put my regrets about my debut projects ‘Butterfly’ and ‘She’s Gone’ behind me and create even better projects. Thank you!

G-Dragon as the Most Polite Idol?

G-Dragon may have a cold and harsh look when on stage but in real life G-Dragon is not. BIGBANG member state that G-Dragon is a member who is very funny and articulate when they are offstage. Not only that, G-Dragon is also known to be very polite towards others. G-Dragon always bent 90 degrees every time he met someone and say thank you every time, he complete the activities either on stage or at practice together with the rest of YGFamily.

Yang Hyun Suk plans to make 2011 2NE1’s year

“2NE1 debuted three years ago, but in my eyes, they still look like rookies. I think that’s synonymous to how they haven’t had that many activities or exposure through TV. Therefore, 2NE1 still has quite a bit to show. This year will be the year to settle it all.”

The above statement was made by YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk, expressing his views on 2NE1’s impending return to the music industry.

Coming back with ‘Lonely’ eight months after dropping their first studio album, 2NE1 has been sweeping Korean music charts, even scoring a perfect all-kill in major charts in May.

Expanding further on the topic of 2NE1’s potential, YG said, “They aren’t popular singers. They’re just starting now. This year is the year that they’ll reach their peak, both publically and musically. Around the time of their debut, many people criticized me with ‘Yang Hyun Suk went insane’, ‘He’s going to get it soon’, and ‘He’s arrogant’ because 2NE1, who were rookies, went out on music programs only once a week. It’s just my opinion that 2NE1’s a unique group and they should be promoted in their own way.”

Though most entertainment companies flaunt their power through how many times they can put their singers on TV, YG Entertainment does the opposite.

Yang Hyun Suk explains, “Rather than having either Big Bang or 2NE1 go on whatever program many times, we try to pick stages with better standards and enjoy it.”

He also put his foot down on the rumors that he was especially close to SBS.

“It’s true I receive misunderstandings. Counting from my Seo Taiji and Kids days, I’ve been in the broadcasting business for about 30 years. If I wanted to be close to anyone affiliated with the broadcasting business, I could, but I don’t. This is because I always keep one rule: which producers of which programs will let YG artists shine the most?”

Yang Hyun Suk then clarified that the reason why he works well with SBS’s “Inkigayo” was because of producer Park Suk Hoon, who’s reportedly the best in directing shows; he could also pick out the accurate points in dance choreographies.

Moving on, Yang Hyun Suk also revealed 2NE1’s ambitious aspirations. “I have a plan to make this year 2NE1’s year. From April 21st, we kept working without rest. Teddy has already made about six songs and they’re all really good. With my producer’s instinct, I have a feeling that they’ll all be hit songs. ‘Do you want to listen to 2NE1’s songs since they’re really good?’ is the kind of promotion I want to do.”

2NE1 is already leading a ‘first place parade’ with their new song, breaking past MBC’s ‘I Am A Singer’ chart domination. The girls are now preparing for the release of their follow-up song.

2NE1, Within Girl Group's Jealousy We Are Silent?

[TV Report, Journalist : Song Songeun] 4-membered group 2NE1, voted as the girlgroup with the best relationship.

To celebrate the release of the horror movie White: Curse of the Melody (directed by Kim Gok and Kim Sun) on June 9th, a survey took place on Nate Movie for a week, starting from May 16th. The question was : "Which girlgroup will never lose their friendship even during a tough competition?"

Popular girlgroups like 2NE1, SNSD, f(x) and Miss A were all nominated and 2NE1 overwhelmingly won first place by getting 57% of the votes.

Celebrating their second anniversary this year, each 2NE1 member has been invidually receiving the public's love through their outstanding musicality.

Following 2NE1, SNSD took the second place with 25% while f(x) obtained 10% and Miss A 8%.
